James A. Saalfield
Managing General Partner

Jim Saalfield has more than 20 years of experience investing in and advising successful early stage companies. Jim has served on the Boards of more than 30 public and private companies in the life sciences, remote data acquisition and data distribution fields. He founded Still River Management Company to manage the Dean’s Hill Limited Partnership in 1994.

Prior to forming the Still River Funds and Dean’s Hill partnerships, Jim was a General Partner in Fleet Financial Group’s venture capital funds, Fleet Venture Partners I through IV. At Fleet, he invested in early-stage and growth companies, as well as small management buyouts. In addition to 26 direct investments, Fleet Venture Partners acquired and managed over $90 million in venture investment assets adding over 50 additional companies to the venture portfolio. Earlier in his career, he served as the Assistant Dean, Administrative Affairs at Harvard Business School as well as an Admissions and Financial Aid Officer.

At Still River Funds, Jim has led the investments in Broadband Access Systems, Bus-Tech, Contour Semiconductor, Global Communication Devices, MEMSIC, Spinwave Systems, Stargus, US Genomics, and Xanthus Pharmaceuticals.

Jim currently sits on the Board of Directors of Bus-Tech, Contour Semiconductor, Spinwave Systems, Tracer Technologies, and US Genomics.

He received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a B.A. from Oberlin College.


Barbara Kroll
Chief Administrator

Barbara Kroll has over 20 years of communications, investor relations, administrative, and operations experience having worked in a variety of roles for both private and publicly-held companies in the healthcare and information technology industries as well as the venture capital industry.

Prior to joining Still River, she was the Director of Administration at SmoothShapes, Inc., an emerging medical device firm in the aesthetics industry. At SmoothShapes, Barbara worked with the Founder/CEO and core start-up management team to build the infrastructure prior to the first institutional financing round. Barbara also worked as the Director of Communications and Administration at Prism Ventures which had over $1 billion in assets under management. She played a key role in Prism’s investor relations and communications programs as well as managing the administrative operations of the firm.

Barbara holds a B.A. in Economics from Smith College and completed graduate work at the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Harvard University.
